What Causes Potholes in Asphalt Pavement?

A pothole is the visible loss of pavement material, not one single failure mechanism. Water, temperature cycles, traffic loading, cracking, aging, and weak support can interact until pieces loosen and leave a bowl-shaped depression.

Short answer

Potholes commonly develop when asphalt pavement first cracks or deteriorates, water reaches vulnerable layers, and repeated loading or freeze-thaw action loosens material. The exact cause at one site can differ, which is why recurring potholes and surrounding movement deserve more than another surface fill.

Water enters through a vulnerable pavement system

Cracks, failed edges, joints, and drainage paths can let water reach material below the wearing surface. Moving loads can then contribute to the movement of water and fine material. Visible water bleeding or pumping is a reason to investigate beyond the hole.

Freeze-thaw can accelerate damage

USGS notes that potholes become more abundant in colder regions in late winter and spring because of freeze-thaw pavement damage. This does not mean freezing is required for every pothole; warm-climate pavement can also lose support and material.

Traffic and aging continue the breakdown

Repeated wheel loading acts on already weakened material. Weathering, raveling, fatigue cracking, patch deterioration, edge failure, and inadequate support can each contribute to the progression from surface distress to material loss.

What to do

  1. Look for the path water takes toward or away from the damage.
  2. Check for connected fatigue cracking, rutting, edge collapse, settlement, or heaving.
  3. Review whether a prior patch failed in the same place and how it failed.
  4. Separate a localized surface defect from a recurring base or drainage condition.
  5. Correct the broader cause through qualified work when a patch alone cannot address it.

Practical notes

Document the condition before repair so repeated failure can be compared with the original pattern.

Preventing water entry and preserving drainage are pavement-system questions; do not redirect water onto neighboring or public property.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming freeze-thaw is the only cause of potholes
  • Ignoring water because the hole is dry on repair day
  • Treating fatigue cracking as a cosmetic edge around the hole
  • Repeating a failed patch without investigating the pattern

General causes cannot diagnose the failure at a specific property.

Drainage, base, structural, and recurring failures need qualified evaluation.
